ParkingNOW! is the campaign for designated on-street and off-street parking for powered two wheeled vehicles (PTWs) -- in other words, motorcycles and motorscooters -- in New York City.
The ParkingNOW! Coalition is calling for:
Off-Street PTW Parking areas. Currently the city has few off-street PTW parking areas. ParkingNOW! calls on the city to improve these facilities and create others around the city, at least one within each Community Board District in Manhattan, and in the denser neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx where PTW parking options are sparse. These areas should include racks to which PTW riders can secure their vehicles. See Examples
Designated On-Street PTW parking areas. New York City is behind many other crowded urban cities that have designated PTW parking, like San Francisco, London, Rome and Berlin. PTWs can reduce traffic congestion in the central city, but if riders have nowhere to securely park, they will not ride to these areas. ParkingNOW! demands that the city set aside on-street parking for PTWs only. Depending on the area, spaces for two to ten vehicles could be equipped with securements bolted to the curb, and with Muni Meters in business districts. See Examples
PTW Parking in Municipal Parking Garages. Currently, NYC municipal garages will not permit parking of PTWs. ParkingNOW! calls on the City to create designated PTW parking areas in all Municipal Garages.
PTW Parking in Private Parking Garages. Many private parking garages, like those owned by Edison Fast Park, Kinney Systems and Rapid Park, do not park PTWs. ParkingNOW! calls on the city to require private parking garages over a certain size to set aside space for self parking of PTWs at a level proportional to the total number of car parking spaces in the garage.
The reduction of fines associated with illegal PTW parking. Currently, PTW parking violations result in the same fines as violations by cars. ParkingNOW! wants the city to reduce fines to levels proportionate to the impact of illegal PTW parking.
